Fed: Crean urges PM to seal stem cell agreement
Federal Opposition leader SIMON CREAN has urged Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD to ensurea final agreement's reached on stem cell research with the states today.
He says the premier's conference is a unique opportunity to get national agreementto enable important research into life-saving activity.
Mr CREAN pledged his support -- and a Labor Party majority -- to backing legislationallowing stem cell research.
He welcomed Mr HOWARD'S announcement yesterday that he will allow surplus embryos tobe used for stem cell research.
But Mr CREAN says limiting the use of embryos to those created up until today, as proposedby Mr HOWARD, is an unnecessary restriction that will hamper research.
Mr HOWARD and state and territory leaders are holding the Council of Australian Governmentin Canberra today.
